Before the procedure:
You may be required to complete an ultrasound imaging exam of the affected area. The exam is an integral part in assessing the diseased vein and planning the procedure and is virtually painless.
During the procedure:
Local anesthetic is administered. Once the area is numb, a thin laser fiber will be inserted into the vein through a very small entry point. While you might feel an unfamiliar sensation, it is not painful. This part of the procedure takes just a few minutes. Laser energy will be delivered to seal the faulty vein. The body reabsorbs the blood vessels, which have been destroyed, and the flow of blood is directed back down into the deeper vessels, where it should be.
After the procedure:
Your post-treatment care will be tailored to your needs. Unless otherwise stated you can return to normal activity immediately after the procedure. The swelling and discomfort associated with chronic venous insufficiency will diminish quickly while the bulging veins will noticeably improve over time.
