Always consult with your care provider for directions based on your unique circumstances. For more information about varicose and spider vein removal see our previous article, How to Get Rid of Spider Veins and Varicose Veins.
What Is Sclerotherapy?
Sclerotherapy is a non-invasive procedure that involves injecting a solution directly into the vein, causing the vein to scar, collapse, and eventually fade away. This procedure requires little to no downtime and is virtually painless making it an ideal treatment for many patients. Results of sclerotherapy are final as once treated the malfunctioning vein is destroyed.
What Should I Do Before My Procedure?
Before your procedure you can expect to have a detailed consultation with your service provider. You may need an ultrasound of the affected area to effectively plan how your procedure will take place. On the day of and days before your procedure be sure to follow the directions provided by your care provider which may include the following directions for how to prepare for sclerotherapy.
- Avoid smoking and alcohol for 48 hours before your procedure
- Do not take anti-inflammatory medication
- Do not shave or apply lotions
- Wear loose fitting clothing
- Eat as your regularly would
- Bring compression stockings if you have them
When Will I See Results from Sclerotherapy?
Our clients always want to know and ask us, how long after sclerotherapy to see results? This will depend on the severity of your veins and your expectation of results should be discussed with your care provider before your procedure. For smaller varicose veins you will typically see results in as little as three to six weeks. Larger more complex varicose veins may take more than three months and possibly multiple treatments before desired results are achieved.
Are Compression Stockings Necessary After Sclerotherapy?
Compression stockings are an important component of your self-care and post-procedure care. We will ensure you are properly fitted for compression stocking during your consultation. Most care providers will request you wear compression stockings for a period of time after your procedure often for a minimum of two weeks. You will not likely need to restrict your activity after your procedure though in addition to wearing compression stockings you may be asked to limit sun exposure shortly after your treatment.
