Hyperhidrosis

Don’t stress over excessive sweating. It can be treated effectively with botox injections

Hyperhidrosis is a condition where sufferers experience excessive perspiration. While usually localized in the underarms, face, hands and feet, hyperhidrosis can also be generalized throughout the entire body. It is not uncommon for those with hyperhidrosis to go through several changes of clothing throughout the day and often has a negative effect on self-esteem. While considered by many to be embarassing, hyperhidrosis is surprisingly common, affecting 1%-2% of Canadian adults. In more severe cases, it can lead to painful and irritating skin conditions, such as fungal and bacterial infections. Despite the social stigma attached to sweating, few sufferers have spoken about it with their doctor or even know about any treatment options.

We are proud to offer this service at both our downtown Toronto and North York locations and are happy to service customers from the Mississauga area.

What Causes Hyperhidrosis?

What Causes Hyperhidrosis?

In the past, hyperhidrosis was thought to be caused by a person’s mental or emotional state, and that the condition itself was purely psychological and only affected those experiencing great amounts of anxiety or stress. According to recent studies, however, research has shown that sufferers of hyperhidrosis are no more/no less prone to nervousness or emotional distress than the rest of the population.

In fact, we now know that it is the other way around – emotional and mental problems do not cause excess sweating, but rather, excessive sweating causes emotional and mental problems. Genes are also a determining factor. Studies have shown that, more often than not, patients with hyperhidrosis have a parent or a sibling suffering from the same condition.
Women have been known to experience hyperhidrosis during pregnancy, but more often than not it is temporary and subsides once the pregnancy is over.

Botox is a well known anti-aging treatment, but did you know it can also be used to treat severe sweating? Botox (botulinum toxin type A), consists of a purified protein produced by a bacterium. Botox is an FDA and Health Canada approved prescription medicine that is injected into muscles and can be used to treat chronic migraines, cervical dystonia, eyelid spasms and even those suffering from crossed eyes. Using a very fine needle, Botox is injected into the affected area, blocking the release of a chemical in the nervous system responsible for the activation of sweat glands, known as acetylcholine. Localized tenderness or bruising following the treatment is normal, and usually subsides within a day.
