No High Cholesterol Does Not Cause Acne
When patients see us at our acne clinic, they often ask questions about what causes acne. A common concern is, can high cholesterol cause acne? Although high cholesterol can cause skin concerns it does not cause acne. Often people misinterpret cholesterol deposits on the skin as being acne, yet this is not the case. Typical acne treatments will not be effective on cholesterol deposits as they are not acne and are not caused in the same way.
What Causes Acne
Cholesterol does not cause acne. Instead acne is caused by the hair follicles on our skin becoming clogged. This takes place when either oil or dead skin fills the hair follicle and clogs it. There are a variety of factors that will affect each person’s susceptibility to acne. Acne is not an indication that a person has poor hygiene or that their skin is not clean.
A main factor in acne production is hormonal changes. Changes such a puberty or menopause can affect acne. Medication, stress and in some cases diet may also be factors that contribute to acne production. If you have concerns about your acne it may be helpful to seek treatment and understand your unique acne factors.
