No, Diet Soda Does Not Cause Acne
In our practice we are often asked the question, can diet soda cause acne? Although it is commonly thought to be a culprit of skin issues and acne, diet soda does not cause acne. In fact, a person’s diet has very little to do with the development of acne. You can be assured that a casual or regular indulgence in diet soda will not harm your skin and that this belief is nothing more than a myth.
What Causes Acne?
We know that diet soda does not cause acne, but what does? Acne occurs when the hair follicles on our skin become clogged. This can be due to oil or dead skin cells. This does not mean, that if you have acne you are unclean. There are a variety of factors at play in each person’s body that may make them more or less susceptible to acne.
Hormones, medications, stress and in some cases diet can be a cause of acne. Hormones are one of the key reasons why teenagers and those going through hormonal changes, such as menstruation or pregnancy, may be more susceptible to acne.
Although diet can be a factor in acne production this is not the case for every person. Diet soda does not cause acne, though some people may find that dairy and high carbohydrate foods do.
