Liposuction, referred to as “lipo”, is a popular procedure used for weight reduction. The surgery aims to slim, contour, and reshape specific areas of the body by removing excess fat deposits. After the unwanted fat has been eliminated, patients will see improved proportions of the body and a more balanced look.

Other factors that may make you a candidate
for liposuction include:

  • If you are an adult within 30% of your ideal weight and in overall good health
  • If you are an individual who has fairly good muscle tone, and firm, elastic skin
  • If you have a positive outlook on body contouring, with goals to maintain your health
  • If you do not suffer from a life-threatening illness or condition that could impair healing
  • If you are a non-smoker
  • If you are unable to eliminate pockets of excess fat anywhere on the body by means of diet or exercise

What areas of the body can liposuction treat?

Thighs
Hips and buttocks
Abdomen and waist

Upper arms
Back and flanks
Inner Knee

Chest area
Cheeks, chin, and neck
Calves and ankles

What are the steps of the liposuction procedure?

Step 1. Anesthesia

Your doctor will administer medications at the start of the procedure for your comfort and according to what’s best for you. Methods include local anesthesia, intravenous sedation, and general anesthesia.

Step 2. The Incision

The only incisions made during liposuction are small and inconspicuous resulting in minimally visible scarring. Next, diluted local anesthesia will be infused to reduce trauma and bleeding, while a thin hollow tube called a cannula is inserted in the opening. Fat is then dislodged using a back and forth movement, while a surgical vacuum or syringe attached to the cannula suctions out the fat.

Step 3. The Results

Improved body contours will take some time to become noticeable after liposuction. It is quite normal to experience swelling and fluid retention in early recovery. While liposuction does not stop the natural aging process, improvements are relatively permanent. It is important to note that in some cases optimal result may need to be achieved with multiple surgeries. It is also not possible to improve skin elasticity with liposuction.
